In this multi-part series on Facebook marketing for small businesses, we will be walking you through tips, advice, and best practices for getting the most out of Facebook for your business.  In part 1 we explained why Facebook is an important platform that every small business should add to their marketing arsenal.  In part 2, we discussed Facebook’s purpose for small businessNow that you understand that Facebook is primarily a broadcast site and that you need to focus on building and nurturing a community and promoting content to your community, in this post we will review how to effectively listen on Facebook (the first step of the  tactical wheel),  pay attention to what your fans are saying and to find companies and content.

LISTENING ON FACEBOOK FOR SMALL BUSINESS

  • Pay attention to the comments being posted on your page and respond to those appropriately.  Make sure you have systems in place for checking wall posts frequently and responding appropriately in timely fashion.  You can set up Facebook to send you an email whenever anyone posts on your page.

    • Step 1: Click “Update Page Info”

  • You will use listening on Facebook to find businesses that you want to connect using Facebook Graph Search.

    • Step 1: Search for a type of business in your area. Ideally these will be businesses that sell to your target audience, but are not competitors.

    • Step 2 & 3: Select Pages on the left column and then like the pages that show up in the search results by clicking the “like” button.

Now that you understand how to effectively listen (the first step of the  tactical wheel) on Facebook to pay attention to what your fans are saying and to find companies and content. In part 4 we will take a look at how to build community on Facebook.
